I'm surprised you didn't touch on Kindle & Audible. I can imagine cross-sells within the Starbucks payment app for Kindle books, QR codes for audio books by the area where people wait for their coffee order, etc.
Those are all great points, Andy. Thank you. I was focused on physical goods for no good reason. The digital goods you're talking about would fit in with my "I know Alexa fits in here somewhere, I'm just not sure where" point towards the end. Amazon might also have Fire tablets in these Starbucks where people could browse ebooks or audio books... Starbucks as a retail platform for digital goods makes sense.
Hi Nancy, I don't think Starbucks is looking to get acquired, but I think for the right price they'd entertain it if only because their shareholders would want them to investigate.
Yeah, it's an important distinction. A place is activated space. I think I ran across this distinction in de Certeau's The Practice of Everyday Life way back. Thanks for reading, Peter.
Really interesting article and you are correct; people loved to have coffee in all the old Barnes and Noble stores that had Starbucks attached.

Is Starbucks for sale??

A space but not a place (!)
